Quick Answer: Feeling pressure to look polished before a brand photo shoot? This guest blog by Karen Blackburn explores why trust comes from authenticity rather than perfection, and how feeling safe to be yourself creates photographs that connect more naturally.
There’s a particular kind of pressure that arrives with summer.
The days get longer, the world gets louder, and somewhere in the background a quiet question starts to form: am I doing this right? Are you social enough, relaxed enough, glowing enough? Are you having the right kind of summer?
The same pressure can appear when we’re thinking about a brand photo shoot. We can start to wonder whether we need to look, act or even feel a certain way before we’re ready.
If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling through other people’s highlight reels feeling vaguely inadequate – or answering “are you doing anything nice?” with a cheerful version of your plans rather than the honest one – you’ll know what I mean.
Summer, for all its ease and light, can quietly become another season in which we perform.
Performing isn’t always dramatic. It doesn’t always look like pretending to be someone you’re not.
Sometimes it’s just the low-level effort of presenting a version of yourself that feels acceptable – the you that’s coping well, enjoying things, not too much and not too little.
It’s tiring in a way that’s hard to name, because nothing is obviously wrong. You’re fine. You’re managing. But there’s a gap between how you appear and how you actually feel, and living in that gap takes energy.
What I’ve noticed, both in my own life and in the women I work with, is that this kind of performance often has nothing to do with dishonesty and everything to do with safety. We don’t show up as we really are because somewhere underneath it all we’re not sure it’s safe to.
Safe to be tired when everyone else seems energised. Safe to be uncertain when the sun is shining and you’re supposed to be making the most of it. Safe to simply be seen – not as a polished version of yourself, but as the actual one.
There’s a lot of conversation in the wellness world about confidence. How to build it, project it, fake it until you feel it. And while I understand the intention, I think it puts the cart before the horse.
In my experience, confidence isn’t the starting point. Safety is. When we feel genuinely safe – safe to be imperfect, safe to be honest, safe to take up space without justifying it – something shifts.
We stop scanning for how we’re coming across. We stop editing ourselves in real time. We relax, not as a performance of relaxation, but as an actual exhale. And here’s the thing about that kind of ease: other people feel it. Not because you’ve said anything particularly profound or looked a certain way, but because you’re actually present. You’re not behind glass. The real you has turned up.
That’s what creates connection. Not the highlight reel, not the polished version – the real one.
I think about Rachel’s work a lot when I think about this. As a brand photographer, she doesn’t put you in a studio under bright lights and ask you to smile on cue. She connects with you remotely, you set your phone up on a tripod in your own space, and she uses an app to take the photos herself – watching for the moments when you’re relaxed, natural and just being yourself.
Nobody is performing. Nobody is holding a pose. And that’s exactly why the images she captures feel so real.
It’s a beautifully literal version of what I’m talking about. The best image of you isn’t the one where you’re trying hardest to look good. It’s the one where you forgot to try. Where you were just present, comfortable and safe enough to simply be there.
The same is true in every area of life. The moments that connect us to other people – in conversation, in business, in how we show up online – are rarely the polished ones. They’re the ones where something genuine came through.
Summer has arrived and if you’re already feeling the pressure to do it right, to look like you’re thriving, to be the glowing version – I want to offer you a gentler frame.
What if ease this summer wasn’t about how things look, but about how safe you feel to be yourself within them?
You don’t have to perform this season. You don’t have to wait until you feel confident before you show up. You just have to feel safe enough – and sometimes that starts with giving yourself permission to stop pretending you already do. That’s a much smaller ask. And it might be the most useful thing you do all summer.
FAQ1: Do I need to feel confident before a brand photo shoot?
No. Many people feel nervous before a brand photo shoot. My approach is to help you feel comfortable enough to be yourself, because that’s when the most natural photographs are created.
FAQ2: How can I prepare for a virtual brand photo shoot?
Preparation isn’t about performing or memorising poses. We’ll plan your shoot together so you know what to expect, choose locations and outfits that feel like you, and create a relaxed experience from start to finish.
A thoughtful brand photo shoot isn’t about learning how to perform. It’s about creating authentic brand photos that help people recognise and trust the real person behind your business.
Rachel’s note: Karen’s words echo something I see during every virtual brand photo shoot. The best photographs rarely come from trying harder. They come from feeling comfortable enough to be yourself.
