Quick Answer: Many people think they need to feel confident before booking brand photos. In reality, confidence often grows through preparation, guidance and understanding what the photos are for. Professional brand photos can feel relaxed, natural and still reflect your expertise.
Relaxed imagery can still reflect clarity, trust and authority.
Summer often brings a different energy to our photos. The longer days create opportunities to work with softer morning and evening light, and many people naturally spend more time outdoors. A professional photo does not have to be taken in a formal setting to feel professional. Thoughtful locations, natural light and simple styling can create images that feel approachable while still reflecting expertise and credibility.
People assume confidence comes first. I’ve seen this particularly when working with men. There can be an expectation that they should already know what they’re doing even though most people feel awkward in front of the camera. What I’ve found is that confidence often grows when people understand what they’re creating, why they’re creating it and how brand photos will support their business. Feeling comfortable being seen is often far more important than knowing exactly what to do. And when you’re ready, the next step is a conversation that begins with booking a discovery call.
Before a brand photo shoot, we explore the purpose of the images, where they will be used and how you want to be seen. There is no need to perform, as you can read in Posing Basics for a Virtual Brand Photoshoot That Feel Natural and Unforced.
We discuss locations, activities and the overall feel of the photographs. By the time of the shoot, there is already a clear plan.
Clients often tell me that this preparation helps them feel reassured. Knowing what to expect removes much of the uncertainty, which makes it easier to relax and be themselves.
You asked me enough questions to get to know me and my business. I felt connected to you and I liked your calm style. Everything was easy and step by step, without too much information all at once.
The result is imagery that feels genuine rather than staged, approachable rather than overly polished, and professional without feeling formal.
I photographed a client in a park who arrived expecting the photo shoot to start once he was ready.
He had stopped to buy a drink and a piece of cake and sat down at a table while we chatted. As he finished eating, he asked where the shoot would begin. I smiled and told him we already had.
The first photographs weren’t carefully posed. They were simply moments of him enjoying his cake and settling into the experience. Later, we created more intentional portraits. By then, he realised there was no need to perform, just be himself.
Recently he chose one of the photographs at the table for his new book and mentioned, “I don’t know how you managed to get me to do that smile. Most people can’t.”
What he didn’t realise was that the smile wasn’t something I created.
It appeared because he felt comfortable enough for it to show. For me, that’s a much more interesting definition of confidence than standing a certain way or looking polished.

Brand photos don’t need to feel formal to look professional. They simply need to reflect the person and the work behind them.
